“Pukeroa Bay” – publish/perform? #2

Pukeroa Bay

As the tide pulls back from shore
Pools are left among the rocks
And children in bare feet explore
The sands, the shells, cold water’s shock.

Pools are left among the rocks
Filled with creatures strange and weird
The sand, the shells’ cold water’s shocks
Cause girls to squeal at monsters feared.

Filled with creatures strange and weird
For boys to grab and poke and torture
Though girls who squeal at monsters feared
Will hide them down in deeper water.

Boys may grab and poke and torture –
Pull tentacles, joints, crack carapaces
And fling the broken parts in distant water
Or on rocks, in cracks and hidden places

Pulled tentacles, broken joints, cracked carapaces
As outgoing tide pulls back the water
Leaving detritus scattered places
Where barefooted children did explore

Note regarding the form…a Pantoum which, however long, should follow these rules:

  1. Each stanza is a quatrain (four lines long).
  2. The pantoum must begin and end with the same line.
  3. The second and fourth lines of the first quatrain
become the first and third lines of the next, and so on with succeeding quatrains.
  4. The rhyming of each unrepeated first quatrain is abab.
  5. The final quatrain changes this pattern.
In the final quatrain the first and third lines are used in reverse
as the second and fourth lines.

But then… rules are merely guidelines.
